Чтение. Трубенева (4)

  1. Politically and historically, Wales is very closely connected to Great Britain. Along with that, the concept of national identity means a lot to the local people. They try to keep their historical heritage, traditions and language. In recent years, there has been a revival of interest in the Welsh language which, along with English, is the national language of the country. Welsh is studied in all state schools and there are also Welsh-language radio and TV programmes.
  2. Wales has about 2,700 kilometers of coastline, mountains with high peaks and beautiful valleys. The people of Wales appreciate the generosity of nature and even try to contribute to the stunning views. Interestingly, if Welsh people are asked what their favourite pastime is, the most popular answer will be going on a short holiday and gardening. Because of high rainfall, public and private gardens in Wales are very green and always look good.
  3. Wales is one of the four parts of the United Kingdom. It has a population of about three million on a territory of a bit more than two thousand square kilometers. Wales is the only country of the UK which is not represented on the Union Jack, but it boasts its own flag with a red dragon on a green and white background. In fact, Wales is one of three countries in the world that has a dragon on their national flag. The others are Bhutan and Malta.
  4. Welsh people enjoy good food and consume not only traditional Welsh food of meat and vegetables but different dishes borrowed from English, Indian, Chinese and other cuisines. Along with that, they value an active and healthy lifestyle. Rugby is not only the national game but a huge part of Wales’ culture. The biggest matches take place in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. It often hosts lots of other national and international sports games and competitions.
  5. Wales is a small country but it could easily enter the Guinness Book of World Records. Wales has more castles than any other region in the world. It can also boast its bright and talented people, who are known all over the world. For example, Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, was named after a Welshman. In 1852, Colonel Sir George Everest became the first explorer who recorded the location of Everest standing 8848 metres above the sea level.
  6. The small territory of Wales has a long and exciting history. The beauty of the place inspired people to create beautiful things too — it is the land of poets and singers. The reputation of Wales as a centre for music and singing attracts local and international performers and their fans. Especially popular is the Eisteddfod festival, which has been held in Wales annually since the 19th century. The festival is a sort of mixture of musical competitions and concerts.
