- The citizens of the Isle of Man do really dislike rats! They believe that even the word ‘rat’ brings bad luck and bad weather to the island. But there is an animal they cherish and protect. It is a tailless breed of cat — the Manx Cat. The legend says that the cats came from a shipwrecked Spanish Armada vessel. The government made the Manx Cats an official image of the Isle of Man and now they can be seen on postage stamps and some artwork.
- The island has a population of just over 80,000 people. Most citizens live in the island’s capital, Douglas, which is the main shopping and entertaining centre, and also the home of the government. The Isle of Man has the status of ‘crown dependency’ and it is not a part of the United Kingdom or European Union. It has its own parliament and government which is busy with domestic matters. However, the UK is responsible for its defense and external relations.
- Archeological artefacts prove that people have been living on the Isle of Man since the Mesolithic period. The Island has the world’s oldest parliament, known as Tynwald. It was set up by the Vikings in 979 AD. The parliament deals only with domestic matters relating to the island. Though Tynwald has modern offices in the capital, Douglas, each July it meets at Tynwald Hill, an ancient Viking site, to declare each law that has been passed in the past year.
- The Isle of Man, also called Mann, is a small island. It is only 50 kilometres long from north to south and 20 kilometres wide from east to west. The island has many hills but only one mountain — Snaefell, which is 600 metres high. The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. On a clear day, it is possible to see England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland from the top of Snaefell.
- Fishing and agriculture were the most important sectors in the economy of the Isle of Man in the past. Now the leading role is taken by financial services, high-technology manufacturing and tourism. For tourists, it’s useful to know that, due to unique constitutional relationships with the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man is allowed to issue its own money. The Manx pound is equivalent in value to pound sterling and is used everywhere on the territory of the Isle.
- The Isle of Man has very close connections with Great Britain, but the citizens of the island value their national identity a lot. English is the official language of the Isle of Man. However, the language Manx, which derives from ancient Gaelic, is also used on the island. The language is still spoken at government sessions, all the road signs on the island are written in both English and Manx, as well as the names of some local shops and public houses.
