- Canada does not often make headlines in scientific journals. Meanwhile this relatively young country has got all the reasons to boast of its inventors. They have created more than one million devices which are used by people around the world. They thought up the electric light bulb, the electric stove, the electric wheelchair, the modern zipper and the first snowmobile. The list is really long and it is difficult to mention all the items.
- The weather is one of the factors that shape the Canadian lifestyle. It’s common knowledge that Ice Hockey is Canada’s most widespread sport and Lacrosse is the country’s official sport. Lacrosse is played with 20 players on a grass field, 10 players on each side. The players use long-handled lacrosse sticks with a loose net on the head to catch, carry and pass a small rubber ball. Lacrosse is greatly enjoyed by Canadians and has gained popularity in other countries too.
- Canada was introduced to the people of Europe not very long ago. When Jacques Cartier, a French explorer, came to the New World in the 16th century, he met with local natives. They invited him and his companions to their kanata (the word for village or settlement in their language). Cartier misunderstood, and believed the natives were referring to the entire country as Kanata. So, he named the new country Kanata. Nowadays we call it Canada.
- D. Canada is the country most well-known for its nature, wildlife, sports and inventions. It is also famous for its maple syrup! Canadians honour the maple tree and consider it a part of their national identity. The Canadian flag is often called ‘The Maple Flag’ because there is an 11-pointed maple leaf in the centre of it. The maple leaf has been the national emblem of Canada since the 18th century. However, the history of the flag is not very old; the flag was adopted in 1965.
- Canada passed back and forth between French and British monarchs over the centuries before becoming an independent nation. Canada is formally a constitutional monarchy with the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, as the supreme governor of the state. The queen no longer rules Canada, but she still plays a significant role for Canadians and the country. Her portrait is still on some Canadian banknotes and coins.
- Everyone knows that winters are cold and snowy in Canada, but the Canadians see it as an advantage that can help attract tourists. Every year, Quebec City has an Ice Hotel. Everything inside the hotel is made of ice. The hotel's café has tables and chairs made of ice, and even glasses made of ice. The rooms are like little snow caves. Before spending a night in the Ice Hotel, guests must sit through a special seminar on how not to get frostbite while they sleep.
